Hazel Clara Davidge Lovell went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Hazel was born in the West Chester area on April 25, 1914. She graduated from Kennett Square High School in 1933. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton W. Lovell, and grandson Clint Mers. Hazel was mother to three children, Edward Lovell of Chadds Ford, Ruth Ann Hummel, of Brooksville, Fla., and Ellen Ratmeyer of Selkirk, N.Y. Hazel also has four grandchildren, Edward Lovell, Jr., Angela Lovell, Cinderly Hahn, and John Hummel, and two great-grandchildren, KateLynne and Jacob Hahn, and a brother David Davidge of Utah. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Katherine Clifton of Calif., Florence Taylor Swisher of Pa., Esther Taylor of Pa., and Elmira Coombs of Del.; and a brother William Davidge of Pa. Hazel, a licensed practical nurse for many years, retired from Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla. and continued to do private duty nursing care in homes for several years. Hazel was deeply rooted in her faith and taught her family invaluable lessons about love and life. For many years she was an active member of the Shiloh Bible Church, Almedia, Pa. involved in women’s and children’s ministries. She was a constant reminder to all of the power of prayer, often quoting Bible verses and singing songs of praise to uplift and encourage. One of her great joys was playing hymns on the piano, sharing this joy with her family and friends. She was a resident of the Wentworth Home, in West Chester, for several years where she brought a radiant energy to all who knew her. She was involved in many activities, including an aerobics exercise program she started, for which she received accolades in the newspaper. Hazel’s talents and treasures were numerous. She loved cooking and baking (her pie crust was the best), knitting, and reading. Her joy in gardening reflected how beautiful a person she was in every special flower and plant she tended, a reminder of her nurturing and caring nature. Known lovingly as Mama, Grams and G-G, she will be deeply missed and remembered for the love and generosity she shared with her family and friends. The memorial service celebrating her life will be at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at St. Cornelius Church, 160 Ridge Road, Chadds Ford.
